More than 1,000 Attend Congressman Connolly's 21st Annual St. Patrick's Day Fete

Over 1,000 Virginia Democrats and supporters gathered this year for Congressman Connolly's 21st Annual St. Patrick's Day Fete. The fete - the largest annual political gathering in Virginia - features corned beef, cabbage, salmon, Irish music, and a straw poll. This year's contest pitted potential Democratic presidential nominees against each other in the first Virginia straw poll of the 2016 election.

Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton received 48% of the vote, followed by former Virginia Senator Jim Webb with 15%, Massachusetts Senator Elizabeth Warren with 10%, Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders with 7%, and Vice President Joe Biden and former Maryland Governor Martin O'Malley both receiving 6%. Various write-in candidates garnered 8% of the vote.

Virginia Lieutenant Governor Ralph Northam came out to celebrate, as did Congressman Don Beyer, Fairfax Board of Supervisors Chairman Sharon Bulova, and dozens of state and local politicans and candidates.

50 Days to St. Patrick's Day!

Corned beef. Cabbage. Music, dancing, and politics. That's right, it's almost time for our 21st Annual St. Patrick's Day Fete! In 1995, my wife, Smitty, and I hosted our first annual St, Patrick's Day Fete, right in our home. Since then, the gathering of neighbors, friends, and supporters has grown from fewer than 100 to over 1,200 attendees - and this year will be bigger and better than ever.

This is my favorite day of the year, and I want you to celebrate with me. Join us on Tuesday, March 17th, from 7:00 PM to 9:30 PM at the Kena Temple on Arlington Blvd in Fairfax for the festivities and to help raise money for my re-election campaign. Tickets start at $40 for a full Irish dinner, drinks, music, and a presidential straw poll. Whether you have joined us before or you're a first-time attendee, we look forward to seeing you and your family there!

Thank You

Last night, I was reelected to my fourth term representing Virginia's 11th district in the U.S. House of Representatives. From the bottom of my heart, I want to thank the hundreds of thousands of people who supported my campaign, whether by donating money, volunteering, or casting their ballot for me.

Elections are always about contrasts and choices. In this election, there are clear contrasts.

We're a divided country. It's not just Congress that's divided: our communites are divided, and our states are divided. And that's because we share some values and we differ on others. Do we believe it is a woman's right to make choices about her own body, or not? Do we think we need to revamp the immigration system in America, or not? Do we believe in global climate change, or not?

Because if we believe the answer is yes to these and many other questions then we actually have a responsibility to do something about it. Denial of those questions lets you off the hook. We Democrats are a communitarian party. We fiercly fight for individual rights and have done so through our long and storied history. But at the end of the day, we reject those bumper-sticker, license plate slogans that say 'Don't Tread on Me' - because that's only part of the equation. What about the next guy's right? What about that woman next to you? What about her rights?

It isn't just about us, individually; it's about all of us as a community. We belong to a Commonwealth in which your diminishment is mine. That distinguishes the Democratic Party from the other party. While we took some knocks around the country last night, I assure you those values are majority values and they are the values that will dominate our politics going forward.

Yours in Service,

Congressman Gerry Connolly

Congressman Connolly Speaks to Jewish Community Center

The Washington Jewish Week profiled Congressman Connolly's remarks at the B'nai B'rith International Brunch last week. Congressman Connolly spent over an hour answering questions and discussing issues ranging from sequestration to Israel and Iran and the Affordable Care Act. He stressed the importance of federal investment as a source of economic growth and stability in Northern Virginia and emphasized the depth of his international relations experience.

September Kicks Off with Fests, Feasts, and Festivals

Summer may be coming to a close, but the 11th District of Virginia isn't quite ready to say goodbye to the cookouts and the sunshine. This weekend, a slew of picnics, festivals, and celebrations kept Congressman Connolly busy as he celebrated the onset of a new schoolyear with friends and constituents.

Saturday found Gerry at the Supervisor John and Ernestine Jenkins Annual Crab Fest, where he met with supporters, spoke to the crowd, and sampled the Chesapeake's summer staple.

Delegate Ken Plum hosted his annual Plum Family Picnic, which drew a large crowd of supporters. Gerry spoke to a fired up crowd at the event, alongside Senator Mark Herring and John Foust.

To finish off the day, Gerry stopped by the Mason District Crab Feast, hosted annually by the Mason District Democrats. This 45 year tradition brings together local volunteers, Democrats, and elected officials. Gerry loved speaking with so many supporters.

Gerry attended the Burke Centre Festival on Sunday afternoon. He spoke with constituents and attendees and visited the booths and rides organized by the Burke Centre Conservancy. An amazing crew of volunteers helped Team Connolly hand out hundreds of balloons and stickers, as well as voting information.

To finish off the weekend, Gerry spoke at the Providence Democratic Values "Get out the Vote" Kickoff Barbeque. The event marks the beginning of our Get Out the Vote effort in Providence and celebrates the year-round effort of local Democratic volunteers.

Gerry loved seeing so many supporters and constituents out and about this weekend, enjoying everything Northern Virginia has to offer. The energy at all these events demonstrated just how passionately Northern Virginia is willing to fight to keep the Virginia Delegation blue.

Congressman Connolly Named Best Local Politician

Northern Virginia Magazine recently named Congressman Gerry Connolly Best Local Politician. This is the second consecutive year that the Congressman has received this honor, which he shares with Senator Mark Warner.

Congressman Connolly was recognized in Northern Virginia's June 2014 issue, a reader's choice "Best of NoVa" special edition. Readers voted on the best shopping, restaurants, newscasters, sport stars, and more.

Explaining Congressman Connolly's popularity, the magazine said, "Connolly has shepherded the 11th District through expansive growth, touting Northern Virginia's strong economic potential and infrastructure. But it is Northern Virginia's investments in both education and the massive improvements to transportation that Connolly is most proud of."

Fourth of July Festivities

Congressman Connolly zipped around Northern Virginia for a busy Fourth of July full of parades, festivals, and incredible displays of national pride. Gerry loved the energy of the crowds at the Fairfax City and Dale City parades, and he spent the afternoon at the July 4th Vienna Festival, where families enjoyed music, crafts, and a “One-Ring Circus.”

A huge thanks to all the supporters who spoke with Gerry and cheered him on in the parades. In case you missed it, take a look at these photos of Congressman Connolly and supporters throughout the day.

We can’t wait to see everyone’s Fourth of July spirit next year!

Snowy St. Patrick's Day Fete Draws Big Crowd

A thousand Northern Virginia Democrats braved a late snowstorm on March 17th to attend Congressman Connolly's 20th Annual St. Patrick's Day Fete. Thanks to them it was another huge success.  Attendees enjoyed the best salmon, corned beef, and cabbage on this side of the pond, and had the opportunity to vote in a straw poll for Democratic nominee in the 8th
Congressional District.

Joining us were Attorney General Mark Herring, Fairfax County Board of Supervisors Chairman Sharon Bulova, and many of our state and local officeholders. For Gerry, this is the highlight of his year, getting to see so many old friends and new faces out in support of his re-election campaign for Congress.

We've posted photos from the Fete on Flickr. Please take a few minutes to look through them.

Countdown to St. Patrick's Day: 50 Days to Go

It’s that time of the year again -- time for our annual St. Patrick’s Day Fête! For 20 years my wife Smitty and I have been holding our St. Patrick’s Day Fête as a way for our family, friends, and supporters to gather and enjoy Irish food, drink and entertainment. Over the years it has grown from a small gathering of less than 100 people to last year’s event of more than 1,200. Each year continues to out-do the last and, whether you attended in previous years or have never attended, we would love for you to be a part of our celebration this year. This year we will feature strawpolls for the Democratic nominees for Congress in the 8th and 10th districts.

Come join us on Monday, March 17th from 7:00 PM - 9:30 PM at the Kena Temple on Arlington Blvd in Fairfax for the festivities and to help raise money for Gerry's reelection campaign. Tickets start at $40 and include a full Irish dinner of corned-beef, cabbage and other traditional Irish fare. We hope to see you and your family there.

4th of July Wrap Up

Another wonderful 4th of July is in the books and thankfully this one was a lot cooler than last year's. Congressman Connolly had a great time at the Fairfax City and Dale City Parades. He was able to meet so many proud Americans, and he even got a chance to try some delicious, local BBQ. If you were able to make it out, thank you so much for your support. If you weren't able to make it out, here are some photos and link to a video of Congressman Connolly, his wife Smitty and his daughter Caitlin in the Fairfax City Parade.
