Fiscal Responsibility
Fighting for Northern Virginia's Economy

A few years ago, a columnist at The Free Lance-Star newspaper in Fredericksburg described Prince William as the ugliest county in Virginia, what with all our asphalt and myriad strip malls.

He must never have gone fishing at Leesylvania State Park or been to Stoney Lonesome Farm, a rural enclave amid the busyness of Gainesville. Those would have changed his mind.

Everyone's familiar with stock conversation starters. In many urban areas, especially this one, few workplace conversations pass without a disparaging comment about the traffic. Residents of Northern Virginia, many of whom are federal employees, face congested commutes into and out of D.C. on a daily basis. From Monday through Friday, the Beltway and I-95 are parking lots. Even the Metro-faithful, onboard buses en route to a station, encounter stand-still rush hour traffic and delays.

Yesterday, Gerry Connolly’s bi-partisan telework legislation passed the House. The Telework Improvement Act (H.R. 1722) will mandate federal agencies to increase their telework capacity. This important legislation will reduce traffic congestion in the Washington metropolitan area, decrease our dependence on foreign oil, minimize air pollution, and strengthen the federal workforce by attracting the most talented employees.
